What Are DTF Transfers? How They Work and What They're Used For

on

DTF stands for Direct to Film, and DTF transfers are a full-color design printed onto a special plastic film, coated with adhesive powder, and heat-pressed onto fabric to create a permanent, flexible decoration.

If you've heard of it but aren't sure how it works or if it’s right for you, especially if you’re considering between DTF, HTV, DTG, or screen printing, this guide covers everything you need to know.

How a DTF Transfer Is Made, Before You Actually Press It

Before you heat press a DTF transfer, it goes through multiple production stages. If you're ordering ready-to-press transfers from a supplier, you receive the finished product at step four. You supply the heat press; everything else is already done.

  1. Design is prepared. The design is set up as a high-resolution digital file (PNG with a transparent background is preferred). There are no color separations or film positives. The file goes to the printer exactly as it appears on screen.

  2. It’s printed onto PET film. A DTF printer deposits the design in reverse onto clear PET film. It lays down a white underbase ink first, then prints the CMYK color layers on top. The result is a mirror-image print sitting on the film.

  3. Adhesive powder is applied. While the ink is still wet, a hot-melt adhesive DTF powder known as TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is applied across the printed surface. This layer bonds the design to the fabric when heat and pressure are applied.

  4. The film cures. The film passes through a curing oven that melts the adhesive powder into the ink layer, creating a stable, ready-to-press transfer. At this point the transfer can be stored, shipped, and pressed onto any compatible fabric.

When you order from Best Price DTF, this entire process happens before the transfer reaches you. All you need to do is position it, press it, and peel it.

Which Fabrics and Surfaces do DTF Transfer Prints Work On?

DTF transfers press cleanly onto:

  • 100% cotton

  • 100% polyester

  • Cotton-poly blends (any ratio)

  • Nylon and performance fabrics

  • Denim

  • Canvas and tote bags

  • Fleece and terry cloth

  • Both dark and light/white fabrics

There is no pre-treatment required, or any restriction to using a certain color fabric. You can even use them on hard surfaces such as bottles, mugs, and laptops via UV DTF stickers.

Types of DTF Transfers

Standard DTF

Standard DTF transfers use CMYK printing with a white underbase on standard PET film, and they work on virtually any compatible fabric with a hot peel. This is the format most decorators use for everyday production. It’s reliable, straightforward, and available by size from $1.00 or on gang rolls priced by the linear inch.

Gang Sheets

A DTF gang sheet is a single roll of film containing multiple designs arranged together. Rather than ordering each design individually, you upload your artwork, we calculate the total area and price it by the linear inch, and you receive a roll with everything on it ready to press.

Gang sheets are the most cost-effective format for production runs, because the more designs you fit onto a roll, the lower your cost per transfer. They're available in multiple sizes:

  • 22 in X 24 in (2 ft)

  • 22 in X 60 in (5 ft)

  • 22 in X 120 in (10 ft)

  • 22 in X 180 in (15 ft)

  • 22 in X 240 in (20 ft)

  • 22 in X 300 in (25 ft)

  • 22 in x 360 in (30 ft)

  • 22 in x 480 in (40 ft)

  • 22 in x 600 in (50 ft)

BestColor+

BestColor+ is a premium film type and the most important difference from standard DTF is the ink set. Standard DTF uses CMYK + White, while BestColor+ uses CMYK + RGBO + White. The addition of RGBO inks produces a wider color gamut and higher ink density, along with a varnish layer, resulting in richer, more saturated color than standard DTF.

Think deeper blacks, more vivid gradients, and noticeably better performance on designs with fine detail or photographic elements. It uses the same pressing settings as standard DTF and is a hot peel.

Glitter

Glitter transfers add a reflective sparkle finish to the design and work on the same fabric range as standard DTF. They require a cold peel, which means the transfer needs to cool completely before you remove the film. This means extra time spent on the total pressing process.Decorators use them for apparel where a bold, eye-catching finish is part of the design intent.

Glow in the Dark

Glow in the Dark transfers look like standard transfers in normal light but absorb ambient light and emit a visible glow in low-light or dark conditions. Like Glitter, they require a cold peel. They're popular for children's apparel and event merchandise, or any other fun apparel need.

How Long Do DTF Transfers Last?

A properly pressed DTF transfer should hold up well through regular washing. The adhesive layer bonds into the fabric fibers under heat and pressure, and when applied at the right temperature and with a finishing press, the result is flexible, wash-resistant, and soft to the touch.

For best results, wash DTF-printed garments inside-out in cold water on a gentle cycle. Avoid high-heat tumble drying. Following standard care instructions extends the life of the print significantly.

Most adhesion failures occur after a few wears and washes, but most can usually be traced back to the application process. Things like too hot or too cold of a pressing temperature, or not doing a second cover press, can cause issues down the line.

DTF is suitable for low printing quantities (think low MoQ) and has a little/no setup cost structure, so it’s great for brands or printers just starting out, or people who need to print just 1-2 pieces or don’t want to screen print.

Who Are DTF Transfers For?

  • Custom apparel decorators and heat press operators –  buy ready-to-press transfers and apply them to client garments. No printer, no powder, no curing oven needed.

  • Screen printers – use DTF to cover short runs and complex artwork that doesn't suit their primary method.

  • Embroiderers – add DTF for photographic designs and fine gradients that can't be stitched.

  • Print-on-demand businesses – single-piece fulfillment with no minimums.

  • Small businesses and brands – branded merchandise and uniforms without committing to large print runs.

FAQs

What does DTF stand for?

Direct to Film. The design is printed onto a special film and heat-pressed onto fabric, rather than printed directly onto the garment.

Do DTF transfers work on dark fabrics?

Yes. A white underbase ink layer is printed beneath the colors, creating an opaque base that makes vibrant results possible on black and dark garments.

Do I need a special printer to apply DTF transfers?

No. A standard heat press is all you need. When you order from Best Price DTF, the transfer arrives ready to press.

What's the difference between a DTF transfer and HTV?

HTV requires weeding excess material before pressing and is limited for multi-color designs. DTF is digitally printed, needs no weeding, handles full color in one press, and feels softer on the garment.

What is a gang sheet?

A roll of film with multiple designs arranged together and priced by the linear inch. Best Price DTF gang sheets are 22" wide with instant pricing on upload.

How do I apply a DTF transfer?

Press print-side down at the correct temperature for your fabric, peel the film, then do a second press with a Teflon sheet. See the full heat press settings guide for specifics.
